Questions & AnswersWhy doesnt my insurance company pay for this?Insurance plans typically have deductibles, yearly maximums and only pay for a percentage of treatment, all of which is determined by the premiums your employer pays. The higher the premiums your employer pays, the better the insurance plan will be. If you are not happy with your insurance plan, we suggest you contact your Human Resources department or employer. Which dental plans do you accept? We accept all dental plans, except for those that require you to see a dentist on their list (HMOs).
Are silver-mercury fillings safe?Although silver-mercury fillings have been the subject of controversy for many years, no scientific evidence to date has shown silver-mercury fillings are unsafe. Our office offers both silver and white fillings to our patients. How long do fillings last, and when should they be replaced? Many factors influence the longevity of fillings, including the type of filling material used, the size of the filling, the location of the filling in your mouth, your bite, your oral hygiene, and whether or not you grind your teeth at night. Fillings generally last between 5 and 15 years. Fillings may need to be replaced for a variety of reasons including breakage, wear, recurring decay, or a defective margin (seal). Is teeth bleaching safe? When done properly in a dental office, teeth bleaching is completely safe. Will my insurance plan pay for teeth bleaching? No, because beaching is considered a strictly cosmetic procedure. Do over-the-counter bleaching products (e.g. bleaching strips) work?Yes, they can work to some degree. But the result from these products is not as effective, uniform or safe as the result from professional bleaching. Also, over-the-counter bleaching products may cost you more in the long run.
How often should I have x-rays?We take x-rays based on your individual dental needs and dental history. Generally speaking, we take checkup x-rays once every one to two years and a full set of x-rays once every five years. However, we do not take x-rays during the first trimester of pregnancy, except in an emergency. Why do I need to have x-rays?X-rays enable Dr. Malouf to see problems that are not visible by his examination alone. Our office uses digital x-rays, which use 75% less radiation than conventional x-rays. Digital x-rays are very accurate, and the images are instantly displayed on a computer monitor for you and Dr. Malouf to see. Do you have nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?Yes, we offer nitrous oxide at no charge to help you relax during your dental treatment. Nitrous oxide is safe, non-addictive and does not linger after you leave the office. However, nitrous oxide cannot be used in pregnant women. Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush or floss? No, it is not normal at all. Bleeding gums is a sign or gingivitis and can only be prevented with daily brushing, flossing and regular professional cleanings. Even though I brush and floss every day, I still have bad breath. Why?Bad breath is often caused by bacteria on the tongue. Cleaning the tongue with a toothbrush or tongue scraper, in addition to daily brushing and flossing, will eliminate most cases of bad breath.
What kind of toothbrush and toothpaste should I use?Generally speaking, Dr. Malouf recommends any ADA approved soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. Anything other than a soft toothbrush will prematurely wear away your teeth. Dr. Malouf may make more specific recommendations for you after your examination. Why should I have my wisdom teeth removed?Generally speaking, there is not enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth, and it is very difficult to keep the gums around them healthy. Wisdom teeth can also exert pressure on the teeth in front of them, which may damage those teeth or cause them to shift. Why are my teeth sensitive?Sensitive teeth can be the result of many diseases of conditions, including gum disease, gum recession, a dying tooth nerve, decay and even clenching or grinding your teeth at night. Dr. Malouf will determine the cause of your sensitivity during your exam and make recommendations to alleviate your sensitivity. Is Dr. Malouf accepting new patients?Yes! We always appreciate your referrals and consider them to be the ultimate compliment for our efforts. |
